About Ono Shoten
Before the war, our first founder traveled to Tianjin, China with our predecessor company and sold various types of paper.
After the war ended, the company returned to Japan and Ono Shoten was founded in Osaka in October 1948.
Initially, the company expanded its business by selling interior materials such as shoji paper and fusuma paper used in Japanese houses domestically as a wholesaler.
Since then, the types of washi paper we handle have changed with the times.
We currently wholesale a variety of washi paper to small and medium-sized domestic paper product manufacturers.
We also export some of our washi paper, chiyogami paper, and custom-made washi products overseas on a spot basis.
About 10 years ago, while continuing its wholesale business of washi paper and komagami paper, the company positioned "adding color to corporate branding with washi paper" as its core business.
By making washi products such as pasted boxes, we can directly suggest to the end user how to create a high-end feel for the product, and how to improve its popularity and appeal.
We support companies and products in improving their brand image.
We have been able to produce washi products by effectively utilizing the network of established manufacturers with whom we have had business dealings for many years.
Our strength is our one-stop service for the production of various washi products as well as related printing and processing.
Our company's efforts are to become a hub that connects end users with manufacturing, printing and processing sites,
Ultimately, they also play a social role in contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.
About Washi
There are many different kinds of washi paper in Japan, and it is said to have a history of over 1,500 years.
There are washi paper producing areas all over Japan, and even today, each area produces its own unique washi paper.
Up until now, various types of washi paper have been made and used depending on the purpose.
For example, Fukui Prefecture is a major producer of washi paper, with many manufacturers and papermaking workshops of all sizes concentrated there.
Our strength is not only in the manufacture of washi paper, but also in our ability to handle related printing and processing in a one-stop service.
Other regions are also good at making washi paper with traditional patterns hand-dyed on it.
He is good at making large-sized handmade washi paper, such as sliding door paper.
There is a place where they make custom-made washi paper for artists such as painters.
He is good at making extremely thin washi paper that is almost see-through.
They are skilled at making traditional washi paper using raw materials such as kozo, mitsumata, and gampi, and it can be said that washi paper is a paper material rich in diversity and regionality that is deeply rooted in the region.
It is said that paper is a barometer of a country's industry and culture. The existence of a wide variety of washi paper in Japan is proof of this.
Also, are you familiar with the watermark in the center of Japanese banknotes?
It is one of the techniques of expressing Japanese paper that originates from the papermaking process.
Another feature of washi paper is that it is possible to add watermarks such as characters or marks to the paper.
In this way, washi paper is not only made using traditional papermaking techniques, but also through expressive techniques such as watermarks, and the unique texture, color, and patterns of the paper can be seen through the papermaking, kneading, and rolling processes.
Sukikomi is an expressive technique in which patterns, designs, and text are layered on top of a base of washi paper.
Hikigake is an expressive technique in which a mold with a pattern or design is placed on top of a base of Japanese paper, and then other materials are layered on top of it.
When dried, the fibers of the raw material spread out, creating a unique luster depending on the light.
The process of kneading is done by kneading the washi paper by machine or by hand, which creates random wrinkles in the paper, giving it a unique texture.
Usually, when selecting washi paper, you look at a sample book and choose from standardized products based on color, texture, and pattern, but you can also ask a craftsman to make the paper for you and create it to your own specifications using traditional methods.
In washi paper-making sites, papermaking methods and expressive techniques have been handed down continuously for ages.
We want to bring unused washi paper making methods and expression techniques into modern times and use them to create our own unique washi paper and paper products.
If you are interested in washi paper, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you.
Introduction and message from the person in charge
My name is Kawate Hiroyuki, and I am in charge of planning and sales at Ono Shoten.
After graduating from a university in Osaka, I first worked in the service industry, with the head office in Tokyo, and then worked at the Yokohama branch for about three years. After that, I returned to Osaka and started working in my family's business, wholesaling washi paper.
First, we visited washi production areas and papermaking workshops around the country, learning about the manufacturing process of washi paper and related printing and processing.
Currently, I am involved in planning and selling washi paper and paper products, as well as developing clients both domestically and overseas.
My grandfather, the founder, left behind a foundation of sales outlets for Japanese paper and know-how on papermaking.
We believe it is our responsibility to inherit these traditions, pass them on to the next generation, and leave them behind in a tangible form.
Our company mainly focuses on wholesale of Japanese paper to businesses, but we also have Japanese paper that can be sold in relatively small quantities to individuals.
We also hope that a wide range of people overseas will be able to experience the quality of washi paper up close and personal.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions about washi paper or washi product making.
There are limitations to the images of washi paper that we can show on this website.
Please check and experience the texture, color, thickness, etc. of the washi paper by looking at the actual sample as much as possible.
Please let us know in as much detail as possible about your desired size, texture, color, pattern, thickness, and intended use.
You're sure to find the washi paper or washi products that suit your tastes.
When receiving inquiries from customers, we will provide actual samples as much as possible,
We strive to provide explanations that are easy to understand.
Please take your time to look at the washi paper using your five senses - touch, sight and taste - and make your judgment.
We will provide a thorough basic explanation and suggest Japanese paper and Japanese paper products taking into consideration your wishes and cost.
On our website, we aim to provide information to people overseas about the depth of the many different types of washi paper, examples of washi product production, and more.
We sincerely hope that this will lead to greater recognition and understanding of Japanese traditions and culture.
Thank you very much for your cooperation.
